Use PWM only for small systems under 1kW where panel voltage closely matches battery voltage and budget is the primary concern. Always use MPPT for systems above 1kW, for lithium batteries (Weco, Pylontech, etc.), for modern 400W+ panels, and for all Deye and TBB hybrid inverter configurations. MPPT extracts up to 30% more energy from the same panels by continuously tracking the optimal operating point. Over a 10-year system life this adds up to significant value. If in doubt — go MPPT.

Without a properly rated changeover switch, your solar inverter can push electricity back into a downed KPLC line during an outage — creating a potentially fatal electrocution hazard for Kenya Power workers repairing the line in your neighbourhood. Do I need a DC surge protector (SPD) on my solar system?
Yes — and strongly so in Kenya. The SPD protects your inverter, charge controller, and battery BMS from lightning-induced voltage surges travelling down the PV cable. Kenya's highland areas — Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Eldoret — experience frequent lightning, particularly during the long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–November). Can a HOBER DC pump run from solar panels without a battery?
Yes — this is one of the primary advantages of DC solar pumps. HOBER pumps run directly from your PV panels during daylight with no inverter and no battery required. Pump speed varies naturally with available sunlight — full speed in strong sun, slower under clouds, stops at night. This makes them ideal for filling a rooftop or underground storage tank during the day, which then provides gravity-fed supply overnight. Why do I need a changeover switch if I already have a hybrid inverter?
Hybrid inverters like Deye and TBB switch automatically between grid and solar power — but they do not always prevent electricity from feeding back into a downed KPLC line during an outage. A correctly rated manual changeover switch provides a physical, fail-safe separation between the KPLC grid and your solar system. Without it, your inverter can push live electricity into the line that Kenya Power workers are trying to repair — an electrocution hazard. Kenya Power requires this protection for all grid-connected solar installations, and most insurance providers will not cover solar-related incidents without a properly installed changeover switch.
How do I choose the right roof mounting system for my roof type?
Concrete tile roof: Use aluminium tile roof hooks — they slide under individual tiles and hook onto the roof batten. No tile removal or drilling required.

Corrugated iron / IBR on steel purlins: Use long L-feet with steel hanger bolts — self-tapping into the steel purlin flange.

Corrugated iron / IBR on timber rafters: Use long L-feet with timber hanger bolts that grip the timber rafter.

Flat concrete slab: Use ballast mount frames anchored to the slab with chemical anchors or penetrating fasteners.
