We hear the same handful of misconceptions on almost every call, and some of them genuinely cost people money — either by talking them out of a good decision, or by leading them toward the wrong system. Let’s clear them up, one at a time.
Myth 1: “Solar doesn’t work when it’s cloudy or raining”
Panels generate less power under heavy cloud, but not zero — typically 10–25% of clear-day output even on an overcast day, and considerably more than that on a lightly cloudy day. A properly sized battery bridges the gap on the rare day generation genuinely falls short. We’ve written a full explanation of this one separately, because it’s the question we get asked most often.

Myth 2: “Going solar means disconnecting from KPLC completely”
Only true if you specifically choose an off-grid system. Most of our clients choose hybrid systems, which stay connected to the grid as a backup and, where applicable, to export surplus power through net metering. You keep your KPLC connection; you just use far less of it.
Myth 3: “Bigger is always better — oversize it to be safe”
A bigger system costs more, and if it’s sized well beyond your actual usage, you’re paying for battery and panel capacity you’ll rarely touch. The goal isn’t the biggest system you can afford — it’s a system matched to your real, measured usage, which is exactly what a proper energy audit is for.

Myth 4: “A cheaper inverter saves you money”
Sometimes, yes. Often, no. A cheap, unbranded, or grey-market inverter can fail earlier, lack genuine local warranty support, and in the worst cases, pose real safety risks from poor build quality. The money “saved” upfront frequently gets spent again on an early replacement or repair. This doesn’t mean you need the most expensive option on the market — it means knowing what you’re actually buying, not just the lowest number on a quote.
Myth 5: “Solar batteries last forever once installed”
All batteries degrade over time and eventually need replacing — lithium just takes considerably longer to get there than gel. Expecting zero maintenance and infinite lifespan from any battery sets you up for disappointment. Knowing your battery’s realistic lifespan upfront (see our separate guide comparing lithium and gel) means no unpleasant surprises down the line.
Want to know the realistic lifespan of the specific battery in your system or quote? Call +254 741 163020 and we’ll give you the real number, not a rounded-up marketing figure.
Myth 6: “Solar panels need constant cleaning or they stop working”
The opposite extreme from myth 5, and also not quite right. Panels do lose some efficiency from dust buildup over time, but it’s a gradual effect, not a sudden failure — a simple rinse every 4–6 weeks keeps most residential systems performing well. It’s worth doing, but it’s not the high-maintenance burden some people imagine before they own a system.
Myth 7: “Solar is only for wealthy homes”
This one probably costs the most people the most money, because it stops them from even getting a quote. Solar is a genuine investment, yes — but with instalment plans, phased budgeting, and a 4–6 year typical payback on residential systems, it’s increasingly accessible to a much wider range of households than the “luxury purchase” image suggests. The households seeing the biggest relief from solar are very often not the wealthiest ones — they’re the ones who were feeling their KPLC bill the most before switching.
Think solar might be out of reach for your budget? It’s worth a conversation before you assume that. Call or WhatsApp +254 741 163020 — we’ll give you a straight answer, including if the timing genuinely isn’t right yet.
The pattern behind most of these myths
Nearly every myth on this list pulls in one of two directions: either talking someone out of solar who’d genuinely benefit from it, or pushing someone toward an oversized, overpriced, or poorly chosen system. The fix for both is the same — get real information specific to your situation, from a proper site assessment, rather than general assumptions picked up secondhand.
