A lot of people put off calling about solar simply because the process feels like a mystery — how long does it take, what do you need to prepare, will your house be in chaos for a week? Here’s exactly what to expect, from the first phone call to the day your system switches on.
Step 1: The first conversation
You call, WhatsApp, or fill in a form. We ask a few basic questions — roughly what you’re hoping to achieve (lower bill, blackout backup, full independence), your current KPLC bill if you have it handy, and your location. This takes a few minutes and costs nothing. No commitment at this stage.
Step 2: The free site assessment
We visit your home or business at a time that works for you. This is the part that actually determines your system size — we look at your roof (type, orientation, any shading from trees or buildings), check your DB board and existing wiring, and go through your appliances and usage patterns with you. We’ll ask about your last few KPLC bills if you have them, since actual billing history tells us more than a guess ever could.
This usually takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the property.
Ready to book your free site assessment? Call or WhatsApp us on +254 741 163020, or fill in the form on our contact page — we’ll schedule a visit at a time that suits you.
Step 3: The quotation
Within a few days of the site visit, you’ll get a full, itemised quote — panels, inverter, battery, mounting, cabling, and labour listed separately, with the system size and expected output clearly explained. This is also when we talk through payment options if you’re not paying the full amount upfront (see our separate guide on solar financing in Kenya).
Take your time with this step. A good quote is worth reading properly, and we’re happy to answer questions before you commit to anything.
Step 4: Scheduling and preparation
Once you confirm, we schedule the installation date and order any equipment that isn’t already in stock. We’ll let you know roughly what to expect on the day — whether you need to clear access to the roof, move anything near the planned inverter location, or arrange anything else in advance. Most of the time, preparation on your end is minimal.
Got questions about what you specifically need to prepare before our team arrives? WhatsApp us on +254 741 163020 and we’ll walk you through it.
Step 5: Installation day
For a typical home system, installation takes one to three days, depending on system size and roof complexity. Here’s the general order of work:
- Mounting structure goes up on the roof first — the frames the panels will sit on.
- Panels are installed and wired on the mounting structure.
- The inverter and battery are installed at the agreed indoor or sheltered location.
- Cabling runs between panels, inverter, battery, and your DB board, following proper electrical protection standards.
- Testing and commissioning — the system is switched on, checked for correct operation, and monitored briefly to confirm everything’s working as designed.
Larger commercial systems or more complex roof structures can take longer — we’ll give you a realistic timeline specific to your project before work begins, not a generic estimate.
Step 6: Handover and training
Before we leave, we walk you through how to read your system’s app (SolarmanPV, Growatt, or VictronConnect, depending on your inverter), show you the basics of what to check if something seems off, and make sure you know how to reach us for support. You’ll receive your warranty documentation and any compliance paperwork at this stage too.
Already had your system installed and want a refresher on using the app, or have a question about your setup? Call +254 741 163020 — we support systems we installed long after the original handover.
Step 7: Net metering application (if applicable)
If you’re pursuing net metering, we submit the application to KPLC on your behalf at this stage, along with the required technical documentation. This part runs on KPLC’s timeline, not ours, so we’ll keep you updated rather than leave you guessing (see our separate guide on how net metering actually works).
What the whole process usually takes, start to finish
From your first call to a fully commissioned system, most residential projects take 2 to 4 weeks — a few days for the site visit and quote, a short wait for equipment if anything needs ordering, then 1–3 days on-site for installation itself. Larger or more complex commercial projects take longer, and we’ll always give you a realistic timeline specific to your project rather than a generic promise.
